Temperatures are rising here in Vermont. It is happening very slowly, but it is getting more noticeable by the day. Our local friends say that summer will come overnight. One day we will wake up and it will be 80 degrees until the end of August. To say “I cannot wait!” would be an understatement. The fact that tomorrow is Mother’s Day and it is still only 50 degrees outside is a new concept that I am getting used to. Still, I am super excited for summer as they say Vermont summers are beautiful. Speaking of Mother’s Day and summer, today’s recipe, Lime Drop Martini, is perfect for both tomorrows Mother’s Day celebration as well as any party that you are planning to throw this summer. I know most people are big fans of lemon drop martinis, but I personally love its sister cocktail made with fresh squeezed lime juice just as much. I am also a big fan of espresso martinis but that’s a story for another day. This Lime Martini recipe is refreshing and just enough sweet to satiate your senses. Plus, it comes together in less than 10 minutes.
About This Lime Drop Martini Recipe:
The recipe has three steps: First, rim the edges of a martini glass with sugar and lime zest: I know that you might think of this as an additional step, but believe me the freshness and flavors that comes from the oils of the zest combined with cane sugar is totally worth the extra time. Second, make mint flavored simple syrup: This was my twist on the classic recipe that you can easily find on the internet. By muddling fresh mint leaves, lime juice, and small wedges of lime along with simple syrup, you give a surprisingly refreshing flavor to the overall cocktail. In terms of the simple syrup, I used Powell & Mahoney’s simple syrup that is made with cane sugar. It is an essential in our home bar as both my husband and I think that it is a huge time saver when we want to make a quick cocktail for ourselves. Here if you can plan ahead, I recommend mixing together the simple syrup, mint leaves and lime juice in a jar and letting it marinade for a few hours or even overnight. Keep in mind that the more it sits the more mint-y and refreshing it gets. Final step is making the drink: You make the cocktail by mixing together vodka, mint flavored simple syrup, orange liquor with some ice. From what I understand, most classic recipes for lime (or lemon) drop martinis do not use orange liquor, but I thought it was a nice addition so I included it in the recipe. If you do not like it or don’t have it, feel free to substitute it with more vodka.
